There's a widely accepted (by us) theory that you can judge any album by its third track. Track one announces intention. Track two confirms it. Track three reveals whether the artist had anything left to say or just needed to fill a runtime. By this standard, 2026 has already produced two all-timers, three deeply competent albums with beautiful third tracks, and one major release where track three is bafflingly a skit.

The standout so far is unquestionably the sophomore release from South London artist Delara Safi, whose third track "Saltwater Anniversary" is six minutes of the most emotionally precise songwriting we've heard in years. It builds from a single piano note into something that physically relocates your feelings. We've replayed it 47 times in the ScoopBuzz office and once caused a colleague to cry at their standing desk.

Also deserving of mention: the surprise drop from the Texas indie collective who shall remain unnamed until you find them yourself (hint: the album art is a blurry photo of a highway rest stop), and the pop comeback of the decade whose third track is a stripped acoustic version of the lead single that absolutely destroys the original. Rankings, full track picks, and streaming links are below.
