People tell you solo travel is life-changing and then refuse to explain how they actually afforded it. This article is the antidote. I spent forty-two days moving through Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia with a daily budget of exactly $50 USD — including accommodation, food, transport, and activities. I kept a spreadsheet. I have receipts. Let's talk.

The night train from Barcelona to Paris is the move. It costs roughly €40 with a couchette, eliminates one night of accommodation costs, and you wake up in a different country, which never stops feeling cinematic. Hostels in the €18–28 range in shoulder season are genuinely good — Ljubljana's hostel scene in particular was cleaner and more social than some boutique hotels I've paid triple for.

Food is where most travel budgets quietly explode. The fix is simple: eat where there are no menus outside the door with photos on them. Local lunch specials (the "menu del dia" in Spain, "pranzo" in Italy) deliver a multi-course meal with wine for €10–14. The pasta I ate standing at a bar counter in Naples for €3.50 remains the best meal of my adult life, and I refuse to accept any arguments to the contrary.
